We are committed to reusing our bottles…

Consumers want to reuse bottles and there is no technical reason why we can’t help them.

A lot is talked about how recycling glass bottles is the best way to save energy and help save the environment.

But it’s not!

The best way to help the environment is to reuse bottles.

When an empty Devonia Water bottle is returned to us, we can wash and reuse it, saving approximately 16 x the energy compared to crushing it and reforming the glass into a bottle. That means 16 x less carbon dioxide

That doesn’t even begin to take into account the environmental cost of transport from the manufacturing plants across the world. At Devonia Water, the distance from the washing machine to the filing machine is only 5 meters!

Recycling is important as it saves glass from going into landfill, which is the worst possible outcome. However, the energy savings are minimal because of the environmental cost of sorting and transporting. Also, when a new bottle is made it will only ever contain approximately 20% recycled glass.  Most recycled glass goes to construction material.

We’re proud to have been at the forefront of pushing back the wasteful use of glass bottles for over 20 years.

With over 130 tons of glass saved from landfill, we can proudly say we have also saved 19500kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.

Reusing involves no technical barriers. Devonia has a solution for those who wish to be more environmentally responsible.

Devonia is a leader in the environmental world of re-use.

Bottles are collected, carefully washed and reused to ensure our impact on the environment is as low as possible.

This process is completely unique. In fact, in 2016, we won the Devon Environmental Business Initiative award.

Our records go back many years and we can say with confidence that, over the last ten years, we have reused 80% of our bottles. 4 out of 5 bottles we sell will come back and be reused.

We are now achieving a re-use rate of 82% and this is only achievable thanks to all our environmentally committed customers.

The only part of what we supply that isn’t reused is the aluminium cap. This is a security thing. Each cap has a one-use-only breakable seal. Whilst on the bottle the security tabs are complete but unscrewing the cap breaks the tabs. This ensures that the bottle has the original and correct contents but also means we can never use it again. However, the cap can be recycled in the old way by taking it to a recycling centre.
